Honestly, I can't think of anything that it doesn't do better than aluminum. Iron Baltic is made of HDPE.

2017-3-1 Plastic skid plates actually work ok. They are really thick and tough. Downside is they are not stiff compared to aluminum, but on most bikes they are mounted right against the frame rails so the frame rails absorb the hits and the skid plate mostly allows the bike to glide over the rocks and prevents any sharp points from doing damage. Also plastic doesn't buzz as much.

They are both great quality, with great fit and finish. The plastic ones do slide a little better, but they get gouges and grooves cut in them easier as well.
2013-12-25 Granted we are talking a 300 pound bike ridden pretty aggressively and crashed hard in tough conditions. Plus the same ride had mangled the aluminum skid plate on another bike in previous years. But the difference was nothing got through the aluminum plate to damage the bike. So both of my KTM's wear aluminum these days. I can live with the noise.

2021-10-22 I believe the general consensus is that a plastic or composite skid plate doesn't reflect or resonate engine noise as much as aluminum/metal. There are skid plates that offer more protection than the Acerbis. It just depends on how much you want to armor-up. I'm very satisfied with the Acerbis skid plate. Mo-Grease.

The plastic plate on my Rincon was in two pieces, all 4 quads have belly plates, the 3 solid axle ones have rear diff guard plates as well and all but the Rincon have A-arm guards. All were clearance/sale stuff I found on ebay and prices ranged from $25 to $60.
